Social partners launch new project to update OiRA tool for the tanning sector
COTANCE and industriAll-European Trade Union have launched the Due Diligence for Healthy Workplaces in the Tanning Industry project, which aims to update the OiRA tool for the tanning sector and to conduct an EU survey on current practices for the identification and reporting of concerns regarding workplace health and safety conditions in tanneries along the leather value chain.
As part of the project, the two partners have also launched two calls for tenders to look for occupational health and safety professionals to conduct the European survey and to update the online OiRA database (health and safety at the workplace in tanneries). The deadline for submissions is 31 March 2017 at 12.00 pm CET.
Reports on workplace accidents and working conditions in third countries’ tanneries have resulted into a negative public opinion of the tanning industry and the appeal of leather. Therefore, the industry needs practical and cost-effective tools for demonstrating good practice and buyers of leather need concrete guidance on how to evaluate suppliers to prevent risks.
The project, which will also include the organisation of a final conference in the second half of 2018 to disseminate its results, is being developed within the framework of the EU support programme for the Social Dialogue. Its objectives will be carrying out in cooperation with the organisations UNIC (Italy), VDL (Germany), ACEXPIEL (Spain), FFTM (France), UKLF (UK), APPBR (Romania) and SG (Sweden).
